Recent amendments to the Domestic Animals Act 1994 have resulted in changes to the legal requirements of Foster and Rescue Groups within Victoria. Under the new provisions of the act we are now required to provide a microchip number with each animal advertised for adoption. Where previously we were able to advertise kittens on our website prior to having them microchipped, and rely on the deposit from their new foster family to help cover the costs of this, we are now required to have each kitten microchipped before they are posted for adoption on our website. Although this new provision is a positive step in pet identification, it means that we can no longer advertise any kittens under 6 weeks old as this is the minimum age for microchipping and we must cover the microchipping costs prior to placing the kitten on our website for adoption.These new requirements, along with inflation have increased the costs charged by our veteranarians to provide the microchipping, de-sexing and vaccinating service.

As a result, the cost of adopting a kitten through us has risen to $170. The cost of adopting an older cat or one of our mother cats will remain at $135 as they are often harder to rehome when in competition with the kittens.

Although we have been forced to increase our adoption fees to continue with our work, you can be comfortable in the knowledge that a cat or kitten adopted from Peninsula Cat Rescue is vet checked, de-sexed, microchipped and vaccinated. By adopting from us you are helping to promote responsible pet ownership and are helping to break the cycle and save a life.
